Edinburgh 1810 Charles Murray of Letho, a young gentleman of means, is in much demand a rich widow, an old friend, and new military acquaintances all need his help. But when Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville, sends him an invitation, vanity and curiosity force him to accept – and straightaway he has to deal with murder. Why did a cowardly surgeon kill a drunken engraver? And what would the consequences be, in the rainy mists of autumn? In the end Murray’s answers to his problems will lead to a decision that will change his life. Fellowship with Demons is the fifth in the Murray of Letho series, set in Georgian Scotland.

Fellowship with Demons Murray of Letho Volume 5 Lexie Conyngham 9780957431256 Books

This is a wonderful series that initially I felt was too slow paced but now that I am accustomed to the tempo throughout all the books in this series I am satisfied that any other pace would do an injustice to the time period, characters and storyline. This series is in essence the story of Charles Murray growing into manhood from his late teens to his early thirties. Make no mistake that these are indeed murder mysteries but the circumstances and consequences show a young man, with much burden of an estate and staff, having to grow to maturity much faster than we would expect of a person in today's world. Set this in early 1800's Scotland with rampant political corruption, betrayal, class discrimination, education viewed as unnecessary and of no use, add violence to the mix, and an author who knows how to properly write and you have an excellent read.

Fellowship with Demons Murray of Letho Volume 5 Lexie Conyngham 9780957431256 Books Reviews

Another wonderful read set in Georgian Edinburgh, featuring the gentleman - Murray of Letho, who is burdened with an eventful social calendar and similarly abundant supply of bodies.

This is by far the best book in the series as a murder mystery. The other books have blended period atmosphere ,Austen style dialogue and social conventions. This book takes its murdering rather more seriously than others in seris to date. The plot is tightly woven from the first few pages and is more complex and elaborate than in previous books. Lexie has always delivered on the period atmosphere and accurate details of the setting, now she is excelling with a true murder mystery worthy of the name.

Once again the meticulous attention to the details of the period leaves me breathless. On opening the pages I feel as if the mists of time have parted leaving me 200 years in the past. Having lived in Edinburgh all my life I take its environs for granted, but reading Lexie's books makes me more aware of the history bound deep into the stones and streets I walk though every day. I am left amused and astonished by the concerns and thought processes of the protagonists but find no fault in them. The essential Scottish twist bound within these books, and all their characters distinguishes them from others of their ilk and makes them a mandatory read for me.
Charles Murray of Letho is back in Edinburgh for this 5th book in Lexie Conyngham's fine series. Charles is asked by Viscount Melville, one of the most important men in Scotland, to find out if there is something not quite right about the family of Rose Ronaldson, as one of his young relatives is hoping to marry her. Since Melville is one of the most important men in Scotland, this is not a request Charles can refuse. Rose's brother is about to appear as a witness in what seems like a straightforward murder trial, so Charles attends the proceedings in the hope of scraping an acquaintance. However, Charles has a nose for murder and he suspects there may be more behind this one than comes out in evidence. And when the killer is then murdered himself, Charles' suspicions are well and truly aroused...

Conyngham writes very well and her characterisation is very strong. Murray is now established as the head of his family and at the age of 26 is thinking it might be time to find a wife. His father's old friend Alester Blair appears again in this book, likeable and eccentric as ever as he provides advice and assistance to the younger man. And as always we get to see what happens below stairs too, where the butler Robbins is having to cope with the frailties of the elderly housekeeper Mrs Chambers.

But what sets Conyngham apart is the authenticity of her depiction of post-Enlightenment Scottish society, and in each book she shows us a different aspect. She mixes historical fact and real people so seamlessly into her fictional stories that it's impossible to see the join. In this story, we are given an inside picture of the militia stationed in Edinburgh Castle, where French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars are being held. There are shades of Austen, or perhaps Georgette Heyer, as we are shown the officers and young ladies attending balls and concerts, and anxious mothers trying to find suitable husbands for their daughters; but all contrasting with the darker elements of the story - drinking clubs, family secrets and, of course, murder.

This is an excellent and well-plotted addition to the series - I only got to the solution at roughly the same time as Charles. It could be read as a standalone but to get the most out of the characters I'd suggest reading the books in order starting with Death in a Scarlet Gown. The series is as good as any historical crime I've read (including Shardlake) and in my opinion deserves a wider readership than it gets. Highly recommended.
Another entertaining book in the Murray of Letho series. This time, Murray has bitten off more than he can chew. Approached by a powerful political figure to investigate a possible scandal in the Ronaldson family, he finds himself in many kinds of danger. Everyone from a serial killer to a matchmaking society woman seem out to get him!

As I've come to expect from this series, the early 19th century in Scotland comes alive in this novel. Ranging from glamorous society women to servants and tradesmen, the author has created a cast of characters who are believable and three-dimensional.

I'd definitely recommend this book, and I'm looking forward to the next in series.
