I bought this after having read James Robert's amazing Transformers run on "More Than Meets the Eye" for IDW. I figured that if modern scribes are reimagining the universes that I cared about when I was 8-11, then perhaps He-Man would be handled well too. When I learned that Keith Giffen and Geoff Johns were involved, my expectations increased.

Alas, this is awful. I think my 8 year old self would have liked it, but that my 10 year old self would not have. The plot is silly and predictable, the dialogue is stale and the characterizations are weak. The art is below average as well.

The Dave Wilkins covers are fantastic, and are reminiscent of Alex Ross's work on the DC Universe. They are 4-star covers. That said, it can't save this dismal collection. Buy it for a young child, but otherwise I suggest you pass.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a comic book series by DC Comics, based on the Masters of the Universe. The series is made up of an ongoing series, two standard mini-series, a digital mini-series and several origin one-shots.In July 2012, a six-issue mini-series started titled He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The series lasted until January 2013. In the story, Skeletor succeeds in capturing Castle Grayskull but ultimately fails at unlocking the secret of its power.

First lest talk about the pro's of this new he-man comic. The art is excellent and the book has almost off of your favorite characters here. The story is solid and does not really story far from previous version of masters of the universe. The characters were well done in my opinion and behave close to what you would expect.

As for the cons the first couple of stories do not explain were certain characters are and what happened to them, It does explain right away why Skeletor does not simply destroy the main characters when he ahs the chance. In fact Skeletor and his followers come off as a bit stupid at first. A few people may have a problem some of the minor changes. This is not completely the same as the filmation he-man and is closer to the 2002 version. He-man may occasionally kill some one and their and slight changes with other characters as well. King Randor for one is far different than he was portrayed in the filmation series. One maim character in particular in other versions plays little to no part here.

In all I enjoyed this book it may not be for every one. Some fans of the original series many not like small changes and the first. There are some weak elements in eh first book, but if you keep reading it gets better as the series progesses. I loved all the different version of he-man and this just gets better and better with each book. They have even done books with she-ra,Hordak and many of her set of villains I personally love these books and am waiting for the next ones to be released on kindle.
I've never really been a reader of comic books but was curious how this would look through the app on my iPad. It's really quite nice, well drawn with good color, and I particularly enjoy how the panels highlight and expand in order as you swipe, taking away the difficulty of trying to figure out what order things go in. The story is interesting, particularly if you remember the old cartoon. Overall, this was an absorbing experience.
I expected a reboot, but instead it supposedly picks up where the Marvel series left off? I didn't read too much of that series, so I'm kinda lost as to what is happening. The art is ok, I expected a cleaner style, giving the title, the story is ok. Got it mostly for nostalgia reasons, not because word of mouth or reviews that the story was good.
Finally a He-Man story made for the people who grew up with the character as a child and need it written to enjoy as adults. It's not an origin tale. It starts out with Skeletor presumably having won the original battle from the cartoon and all the main characters have had their memories wiped and are all living different lives. Then Adam gets his memory back and finds the sword of power again and the story just takes off from there.
the art design and pattern for the action/fighting scenes was too ambitious. this is a comic/graphic novel, the author should have focused more on the story and basic static images, and then allowed the reader to fill in the blanks. It seemed to be a first attempt, as if the author/creator had not tried this type of medium before.

He should have kept it simple. Bang! Pow! And then have the character symbolize the moral of the book with a specific pose. Thoughtful, courageous, humble, or any combination of emotions
I have debated on buying this comic since it was launched. I ended up passing, but then I saw this collected edition on for a good price. I ordered it, and I am so glad I did. I am a child of the eighties, so I watched the cartoon and collected the toys. This comic is fun. I'll try not to post any spoilers. The story starts off with Adam being a woodsman by trade, with no idea of his alter ego. He dreams of life as a hero. We soon meet our other cast members, who also have no idea of their past lives. The story is modernized a bit, and the art overall is fantastic. I just received volume 2 and I can't wait to dig into it.
I enjoyed this book for what it was a (somewhat) more mature look at the Masters of the Universe. The writing wasn't stellar, but it wasn't really sub-par either.

I'll admit, it felt repetetive, with each villain saying almost the same thing during their introduction, which pretty much boiled down to "Why kill He-Man outright when I can make it more interesting?"

The other issue I have is that, to me, this doesn't really work as a standalone book; it doesn't have a clear backstory, and the end is somewhat anti-climactic.

BUT, the art is very nice, and harkens the very VERY early He-Man comics; and it is also more Conan-esque, which I see as a plus given the psuedo-Hyborian feel of Eternia. The plot is pretty decent, as is the dialog, with Skeletor being especially well written.

In closing; good but not great as a standalone tale, but taken holistically (with the other comics in mind) it probably works better.
