Millions of pets are adopted from shelters and rescues each year. A vast number of these pets do very well in their homes and live out their lives in this 'forever' home. But what about the matches that don't go so well? Countless owners have adopted pets only to find out later that the pet has major behavioral issues that they find difficult or are unable to live with.

This eBook explains the differences between a shelter and a rescue, how that information can affect the quality of pets available for adoption. Also included is information on foster homes, aggression screenings, matching pets with adopters, a list of questions to ask and how to interpret information given to set families up with the best advantages in today's animal welfare world.

About the author
Joann Hughes, CPDT-KA is owner and operator of Pawsitive Pet Behavior, llc. She has been certified by the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers -- the only national certification program for professional dog trainers -- since 2004. She is also a professional member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).

Joann has been actively involved in training and behavior modification of companion animals specifically, dogs and cats, since 1998. She has devoted several years to the study of animal behavior, volunteering as an obedience instructor for a local shelter, fostering countless cats and dogs and providing behavioral support for shelters and rescues.

It was her experiences with her dog Bailey that spawned Joann's interest in training and, most specifically, behavior. Her first experience adopting a shelter puppy led to experiences that forever changed her life. Bailey had having serious behavior problems. It turned out he needed more than the love that the shelter volunteer said was all he needed. In this learning journey that spanned many years, Joann delved into the fascinating field of animal behavior.

Joann spent 10 years working in a shelter environment and has experience working with purebreds, mixed breeds, dogs acquired from reputable breeders and puppy mills as well as rescue and shelter dogs.

While working in the shelter environment, Joann fostered numerous dogs and cats - both long term and short term fosters. Her specialty was rehabilitating dogs and cats with fear issues and under-socialization. In addition, Joann also spearheaded a puppy-raising program at a local shelter where pregnant moms who would have otherwise been euthanized or had their litters aborted were set up in a stress-free environment and allowed to whelp their litters. She recruited, trained and mentored a large volunteer base to provide 24/7 care for eight weeks while focusing on the behavioral development of the puppies and matching those puppies with homes that best fit their personalities.

Joann also has extensive experience in evaluating shelter dogs and cats, conducting SAFER testing and the ASPCA's Meet Your Match Program for both cats and dogs.

She enjoys helping owners understand how to communicate with their pets, understanding their pet's individual needs and tailoring a training or modification program specifically for them.

Joann has also worked with rabbits, horses and birds specifically with clicker training.

Ms. Hughes' e-book Adopting A Family Pet is a strong tool for potential adopters. Having heavily worked with shelters and rescues of varying quality over the past seven years as a veterinarian, it is refreshing to see Ms. Hughes offer detailed information that can empower potential adopters with knowledge. This e-book can help adopters rein in the emotional aspect of adoption enough to ask pointed, in-depth questions about the dog or cat they are considering adopting. The recommendation for owners to involve an outside professional to evaluate an adoption candidate can help both to avoid poor adoptions and also to facilitate a good adoption including preparing adopters for a family pet that may need some behavioral assistance that is within their ability to meet.

Ms. Hughes' e-book also sets a standard for shelters and rescues and encourages them to collect more information and expand their existing programs to facilitate adoptions that are more likely to be successful for everyone involved. As potential adopters ask more questions and frequent better quality shelters and rescues, others will hopefully become motivate to improve.

Adopting a Family Pet is easy to read and understand. It fills a niche for facilitating adopters making positive decisions for their family and current and future pets.

Adopting a Family Pet Navigating the Modern Day Animal Welfare World edition by Joann Hughes CPDTKA Donna Thordsen Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

Those of us who love dogs want to adopt, but we often don't know the whole story behind the place we find our new best friends. Hughes provides a realistic, detailed account of the differences between various types of shelters, humane societies, and rescues, and tells her readers what to ask of each. Crucial information for anyone looking to understand a dog's history before he enters a family.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone seriously considering adopting a pet. Please read it BEFORE bringing your new family member home! It contains so much useful information that can be used for individuals or families who want to add a pet to their home. The author delineates between different types of breeders, shelters, and no- kill facilities so that a potential "adopter" can make an informed decision about WHERE you want to go to find the best animal to fit your family. I have had pets in my home for years, and I learned things that I didn't know after reading this book. There are so many options out there for people, including the internet, and the more informed you are, the better the fit for the animal and YOU!
