Homecoming is a gripping well written and researched adventure novel. The language and historical facts blend perfectly with that era in time. A mystery is steadily building. Uncovering the truth is not going to be easy for Tobias but that is left for James Faro to reveal in future Tobias Hopkins' editions A big five stars from me.

As a some time sailor, boyhood fan of Hornblower and admirer of the late, great Patrick O'Brien I approached is book with some trepidation. Thankfully it as a good enough book to keep me occupied and interested to the extent that I finished it in a single sitting.
On the plus side the author confidently displays his knowledge of all things maritime and historical and the late 17th century comes to life in an easy and natural, rather than contrived and forced way. The book follows the fortunes of Tobias Hopkins (Toby to his friends and drinking partners) S he sets out upon his assiduous quest - namely cracking a father's code. in a way Tobias has to understand the past in order to embrace his future.
The dense and intricate narrative is full of 'events', mystery, murders (a secondary consideration that's never gruesome), and strangers hidden in the captain's cabin.
My reservations partly have to do with the procession of 'events' and Toby's character. In some ways they feel less than fully developed. I would have liked a bit more quirkiness in both respects. A minor reservation is that the authors otherwise impressive ear for the language and style of e period occasionally slips and teeters on the edge of anachronism.
That said this is well written and entertaining. I'm sure many people will enjoy joining the eponymous Mister Hopkins on his assiduous quest.
