Blade of Fortriu was ethralling, heart wrenching and at times a bit terrifying, I enjoyed it a lot more than The Dark Mirror. I found the characters to be more layered, and more interesting. However upon contemplation, I can honestly say that I wouldn't have enjoyed this novel as much as I did had I not become completely enamored with Faolan. I found him to be intriguing and dark and you guys know how I love a man who broods! Though I did like Ana for the most part, I didn't entirely enjoy or believe her romance and I often found myself being frustrated with her naive behaviors on more than one occasion.

This book read differently than Marillier's other works and though I loved it, this series has still not surpassed my love for Sevenwaters. If reading Blade of Fortriu did one thing for me, it made me want to start Well of Shades immediately. I am eager to see what is in store for Faolan and have faith as each book in this series keeps getting better and better.

Blade of Fortriu The Bridei Chronicles Book 2 Juliet Marillier 9780765309969 Books Reviews

This story is action packed with great detail to the characters' emotions, frame of mind, and draws out what may have caused certain characters to react this way or a different way. The fighting and war parts are well-written, without unnecessary gore to get the point across. The spirituality of certain characters are very well-expressed as are the lack of spirituality in other characters. I loved every moment of this book!
I am a Marillier fan, her Sevenwater Trilogy was excellent reading. I liked the first in the Bridei Trilogy, The Dark Mirror--not so much as the Sevenwaters Trilogy but I liked it enough to read this second book in the series.

Warning Spoiler
My complaint is that the author made a huge mistake in this story -- She created a strong heroine and a strong hero --she gets the reader hooked into these two characters and then suddenly she creates another character, who the heroine suddenly falls in love with. After building the hero and heroine's characters up and the reader anticipates their devotion to eachother she gives up on the pair--she lost me--she had a great story going and then midstream she made poor choices in her plot. Perhaps she did this in order to write book three in this Trilogy? If that is the case all I can say is, "what a ripoff" --I am not going to be buying the third book in this series, if I read it --I will get it thru the library.
This is perhaps my favorite trilogy ever and although I loved The Dark Mirror (book#1), this one cemented it for me. I found the character Faolan so intriguing in the first book, but in this book he totally comes to life. I read this book skipping meals because I could not put it down. The story and the amazing characters just pulled me right in as every one of Juliet Marillier's books has done. If I had to choose my two favorites of hers, this would be one of the two and I have read them all.

In this story King Bridei has given his faithful friend, Faolan, the task of delivering the beautiful Ana to her prospective husband in order to cement an alliance. Danger is everywhere and there are so many twists and turns to this story of intrigue. Enter the supernatural in the form of a beautiful young man and also enter his loyal and powerful guard and eventually the bond between the four of these individuals. I cried more than once in this book and cared so much for each one of them. Faolan has to be one of my favorite book heroes of all times and the minute I picked up the next book I looked on the back to see if his name was mentioned. It is and if you read this book you will definitely read the next one!
At least I really liked it as it deals with various Persons not really explained what happened to them in the previous books. Her imagination is surprising and well executed. Another page turner. That it is based on history in a certain sense also adds to reading and learning from this book.
Who doesn't love a misunderstood, dark, and brooding antihero? Foalon is probably my favorite male character of any book, ever. He's complicated and real, and full of depth beyond the bland poetic princely type. Juliet Marillier does a beautiful job bringing him to life (same with all of the other characters, with the exception of Drustan .. Though to be honest, Im a little biased there).

There's a part in the book, when the last battle has turned and Bridei's banner was flying free, that sent me into excited goosebumps. I was literally soaking in every word, and felt like I was riding into the throng of the fighting. I loved it. I can't tell you how long it's been since a book was able to pull me in like that. Never for a battle, either. It was a very powerful scene. I love me some tatted up Pictish warriors.

Anyway, to say the least, I loved this book. Onto the next! Excited for more Foalon.

Cheers,
Shannon
THE BLADE OF FORTRIU, the second volume of THE BRIDEI CHRONICLES (THE DARK MIRROR is the first volume) pairs the intriguing spy and assassin Faolan, with a minor character from King Bridei’s court. Ana is a royal hostage kept there to ensure that the King of the Light Isles, her father, will not betray Bridei.

Like Bridei in THE DARK MIRROR, Ana is also a too-perfect character who can be annoying for exactly that reason. So it’s great that Faolan finds her so annoying and a bit of a pain in the neck. Just as I was enjoying how their relationships was unfolding, Marillier threw a spanner in the works by making Ana fall in love with someone that she basically can’t see. Marillier would have lost me at that point, except for her truly lovely descriptions which made the story come alive for me. Four stars.
