This was my first book from this author and it won't be my last. I liked the premise of the book and I really enjoyed the characters. This was the story of Casey who so much desired a change in her life. She wanted to leave behind her small town and her family, which she loved, but was being emotionally blackmailed into staying with them and helping them out. Casey wanted to become a writer so she thought marrying her longtime boyfriend Joe would help her leave town in search of n
ew opportunities & eliminating her family's dependency on her.
She signs up for a new reality tv wedding show only to get dumped on live tv. Out of compassion and a bit worried about a lawsuit, Adam Carmichael, owner of the TV station, decides to propose to Casey instead. Adam casually met Casey earlier backstage and knew she was a dreamer. She dreamed about becoming a writer and dreamed about one day finding a man who adored her back. Adam was the complete opposite of her, he was always so calculatinng, so predictable that when he found out his proposal and subsequent marriage to Casie was real, he panics. Adam has his own issues relating to his family and his business. After thinking through their situation, they both decide to stay married for a month and put up a good front to the public and their families. This arrangement would satisfy each of their current issues. They soon begin their lives as a married couple and begin to know each other better. I really enjoyed how their relationship progressed and I also loved how they both evolved as a person and as a couple. They both had issues to overcome, and it was nice to see this progression.
Books was well written, story line was really cute, characters were likeable and story very enjoyable. Nicely done....romance was sweet.
Casey is in a bind. You see, she joined this new reality show about impromptu weddings. It backfires and she finds herself married to Adam Carmichael, the network executive desperate to save his media empire. So begins a tale of deceit.
It is deceit in many layers. Every aspect of their marriage is a charade to keep the viewing public from finding out that it was a publicity stunt. So they agree to stay together for their own mutual benefit it was supposed to help Casey extract herself from her family's neediness and help Adam fend off a lawsuit that will give his good-for-nothing cousin half of his company. But is it also tricking them straight into a forever kind of love? And at the end of it all, do they even want to annul the marriage?
Casey is a lovely heroine. Desperately insecure about herself and compensating with the need to make herself useful to everybody, she comes into her own with Adam teaching her that she doesn't have to justify her own worth being assertive and saying no to those who would take advantage of her willingness to help. The secondary characters are also interesting to watch. There's a good story here, good writing and good subplots.
I have a problem with the hero. He has a wall of ice around his heart (like every other romance hero) and is determined not to fall in love with anyone. But his blood runs red-hot around Casey and the mythical wall is in trouble. So what does he do? He runs hot and cold, with the cold winning out. Burning with lust one moment and telling her 'I'm sorry let's just be friends' after he gets her into bed. Talk about a slap on the face.
Even the way he concludes that he can't live without Casey is stone-cold. He goes, 'okay yeah you win. let's get married already'. Well he doesn't say that, but that's what resonates in the way it was written. Nothing passionate, nothing romantic. He just goes, I have to find Casey now so I can go back to sleeping and eating like I used to do before she left. It's the romantic equivalent of me going out to buy pills to fight a fever so I can get on with my life. Which is not very romantic at all.
Skip this one if you're in the mood for a romantic, tugs-at-your-heartstrings romance. But it's okay for when you're noncommittal and just want to pass the time.
I've just about read all of the books that Ms. Gaines has written. I can't believe how different each of Ms. Gaines stories has been and how entertaining. Her Regency stories are as entertaining as her contemporary stories are. I want to name a favorite, but I can't choose. I've loved each one. Thank you, Ms. Gaines, for the hours of enjoyment you've given me. Don't stop writing.
This was a great book. Why? Not only was it free, it was so off-the-wall. The set up of getting married on a reality show worked for me. The intricacies of Tennessee marriage law was great fun to look into, and shows just how flavorful the different states are. Back when I did taxes seasonally, I married a couple. According to Kansas state law, if you file a joint tax return, then you're common-law married. So, reading that someone who fills out a license and then can be married by any past county official made sense to me. Just another quirky state law. I also very much liked how the "reality wedding' was supposed to be the starting point of life for the heroine, Casey. This says, to me, that she is ready for a change, ready to do something about the life that she no longer likes or wants. The hero, Adam, is another case. I liked Adam. I thought he was decent, and well, like most other red-blooded American males. I liked how he kept Casey on the path of change. Secondary characters also make this an enjoyable story. There is a step-mother that appears on the surface to be evil but turns out to be nice underneath all of her layers. There's also a sports car that plays a critical role. While it is a nice sports car, it isn't American muscle. Oh well. One can't have everything in a hero.
