Charity is starting over again after walking away from Ethan before they married. She's a veterinarian in Shelter Bay, Oregon.
Gabriel St. James is back in town after going across the US taking pictures for a job. He's traveled easily in the pull behind the truck mobile home. He's a world famous photographer and also an ex Marine.
There are other subplots with Charity's mother and others in town. Also Johnny and his sister Angel who are once again at a foster home. Their mother was locked in a mental institution and they are going from home to home.
They had met at the wedding of their friend.
She talks to him when they go out for a meal, on the beach.
She tells him of the foster camp, Camp Rainbow and she tries to talk him into volunteering as she plans to do.
When the fire breaks out it brings them all together but death follows...
Love the place this is located and the things in the area, very well described. Hot steamy sex just adds to this book and now I can't wait to get the other ones n this series!

JoAnn continues her storyline of the men in military scenarios and the storylines let us civilians how they must feel when they come home. Keep in mind that these are romance novels where everyone has the perfect love life, sexual experiences, careers,etc.
I loved all of Ms. Rosses Shelter Bay stories. She makes all her characters people I can like and care about. Her writing skills are quite good.
She has been a very prolific writer and I'm sure I'll enjoy all her books.
Whether summer, spring or any season of the year, this is a nice, delightful read. Makes you want to date all over, which shows how encapsulating the story is.
You can't go wrong with JoAnn Ross. Gabe is awesome, so full of wonderful hope and deep feelings. Charity is truly a match for Gabe. It is a heartwarming story, well written, and interesting. The town comes to life and the characters interact beautifully. This character development is Ross's strong point. Highly recommended. Enjoy.

I like the Shelter Bay series very much. The character development is excellent and you want the happy ending. I really like how the author incorporated the story about the foster children so seamlessly. The nice thing about this series is that you don't really have to read them in sequence because the author puts just enough of the previous book into the current story that you aren't wondering about the connection. I am the type of person, however, that like to read them in sequence.
3.5 Rating. Much better than the first book! The pace was faster, the writing more definitive and clear, and the differing stories that were introduced more easily connected and were more easily understood.

I totally agree with Bookaholics Reviewer. The first half of the book is a burst of people and stories, and all you know about Gabe is that he is a big tough Marine, Tall Dark and Silent. Everything he does falls back on his Marine experience and his overseas duty. Definitely an explanation that is needed, but once would be enough. I think even Gabe would get tired of that description.
That said, the rest of the novel was wonderful. I loved the interaction with the characters and the dogs/cats. Charity is amazing. Her mother turns into a generous human being and Johnny is such a hard teen, except when dealing with Angel. The twists and turns of the story totally kept my attention, and what an ending!! No spoilers here.
I have read all of Joann Ross's books and loved every one of them. Her mixture of romance, mystery, and sometimes conflict pull me right in. I was a little worried about the first several chapters of "One Summer", but the middle and end compensated completely for a slow start. I would happily recommend it.
